Some shipping container scatter

A lazy bank holiday weekend doing some shipping container scatter terrain. I (like many projects) started these a while back…

So, as you may have noticed me mention, space is a limiting factor in all things, no space for any fancy tools especially, so ordered a load of mdf bases in various sizes from eBay. I could have gone foam core, but precise flat edges to mass produce a series of boxes was decidedly meh. The bases allowed a series of boxes, with 2mm foampvc for the sides which would give a slightly taller profile… if I hadn’t then proceeded to apparently keep the foampvc as the base. It’s not really noticeable in the grand scheme of things, just a thing I’d planned to take into account and then didn’t.

The frames were clad with corrugated craft card and the edges were done with L plastic strip. Didn’t have enough to do the seven I made so we’re down to six for now like some shite reality show.

Doors still to be done. These will mainly be for Dredd so they don’t need to be realistic really so may go do some kind of keypad. But some scatter suitable for modern onwards…

must be a blue moon…

… as apparently I painted something!

OK, I did these back in June I think but didn’t add the grass and tufts until this weekend gone. It’s been quiet over the summer though, job is knackering me and free time is limited. The heat didn’t help. But I did eke some stuff out, including some bark rocks and these fellas… werewolves and a changeling for The Silver Bayonet.

3D prints from Etsy, lovely minis. They’re about the height of a Perry human so not too massive, although I’ve based them on 30mm bases.

The changeling is also a 3D print from Etsy, some kind of Wood Elf creature I think. I absolutely love it and figured it could pass as a changeling as described in the rules, with a more natural magic feel to it. Slender but perfect for a 25mm base.

Enfermera Chapel

Just realised I’ve been starting lots and not producing much, new job really sucks the time and drive, but this week I made an effort to do a chapel for the pseudo Peninsular village.

I’m now stuck trying to work out what to do for the insert that fills in the space around the square…

All scratch built from 5mm insulation foam and Wills Scenics pantiles.

Lord Summerisle’s Company

Horseguards, or at least those in the know at Horseguards, were surprised when the laird of the most westerly of the Hebridean isles volunteered himself and his militia for the duty. How word had reached Lord Summerisle was never determined, but he spoke of the old ways and the threats that lay within with some fervour.

Both he and his men were equally knowledgeable of the horrors emerging from the older, darker corners of Europe and the ways in which to confront them. It would be often remarked though, that they were also admirably, privately devout, his Lordship frequently leading his men in secluded worship. Few had cause to remark on the amount of kindling this entailed.

[As you may have noticed, the Silver Bayonet, like a lot of small skirmish games, is narrative heavy and units get a bit of fluff. I decided to expand on an idea I had a long time ago when I first got the highlander sprues and have one of my favourite folk horror films, the Wicker Man, take place 150 odd years earlier. All surnames are taken from the novelisation and identify with their counterparts here - Dr Ewan is the doctor, Mr Lennox is as close to a scientist as they get on Summerisle, Sorrel Mackenzie is the Lord’s gillie in the novel and so on. The given names are all nature based in keeping with Summerisle tradition, I just like Mr Lennox just being Mr Lennox. Rifleman Howie is an outsider of course.]

Pseudo Peninsular Property - the full village

Finished the vaguely peninsular styled buildings. Three buildings, with accessible interiors, a ruin and a variety of garden inserts designed to allow the various buildings to be arranged in different ways around a village ‘square’ rather than just the grass of the terrain board.

I think a chapel or something will be needed down the line.

The fountain (from Fenris Games, with a cherub from Reaper Miniatures, as the original fountain was very eldritch) is not permanent of course, allowing the addition of other centre pieces - a guillotine or a market (which is still WIP) for now…

Pseudo Peninsular Property

New project means new scenery. A lot of my existing stuff will work, including the timber frame houses as necessary, but having watched far too much Sharpe lately, I wanted something a little more Iberian. First two of four all but finished…

Theoretically, these can do duty should I get into pirates or western games, but will do me for the Peninsular for now. These are the finished scratch builds, made using existing materials whenever possible, 5mm insulation foam and thick card, pantiles from Wills were the only specific purchase. The fountain is from Fenris Games, stagnate bubbles removed and  sans freaky fish sculpture - it needs something a bit in keeping… I also picked up a guillotine which seemed apt.

Hobgoblin and Pixie for the Silver Bayonet

More creatures for the Silver Bayonet.

In TSB, hobgoblins are humans warped and corrupted by the fairy world. This fella was a joy to paint. A 3D printed Hill Giant, in a small scale, so not so giant. Turns out I need two, so will need to get another one.

Base still to do as I wait for decent spraying weather.

And a 10mm Wood Elf Sorceress for my Pixie. Another 3D print from Etsy.  I removed the excessive flower/nature spell effect though. Amazing detail on something so small.

Size comparison…

French Revenants

Revenants for The Silver Bayonet - undead resurrected from numerous battlefields and a handy use for all the marching with muskets shouldered figures you seem to inevitably get on every sprue. Skulls and zombie heads from Mantic.

I’ve seen folks go really damaged with these, but I couldn’t be bothered, head swaps will do and a quick paint job with an Agrax Earthshade wash dirties them up. Good enough.

Various Silver Bayonet WIP

The supernatural investigator is converted from the Perry Royal Navy Landing Party (getting good use out of those). The Navy rosette was removed from his top hat and with his tasseled military boots cut back and turned into riding boots with greenstuff, with the right paint again, he’s something of a dandy adventurer.

The final clue marker is almost done, still quite pleased with these.

And a Living Armour, an animated  suit of armour as per the random encounter table. It’s a Perry War of the Roses knight with his face carved out. Still some work to do on that one.

And goblins WIP, in this case Reaper Gremlins that I think fit the job quite nicely. I want my fairy foes to be quite slight, and they are bloody tiny.

Clue markers

A key component of the Silver Bayonet is searching for clues,  which requires markers. Various bits and bobs contributed, bits from the Perry French sprues, Victrix sprues, Wargames Atlantic skeleton sprue, Fenris Games gravestones, some MaxMini candles, a random GW bit and the Renedra graveyard sprue. All on pennies for weight.

I later realised that the drum on the Perry sprues were much crisper than the Victrix one, so that got redone and was behind on the painting for the group shot.

The Dark Watch WIP

So, a really productive month for me… hampered only by the freezing temperatures which means I can’t go outside and varnish.

But, lots of unfinished bits. Starting with the Dark Watch, my Highland regiment themed warband for the Silver Bayonet.

Some goblins and wolves as well in that shot. But L-R, my officer, a highlander, two infantrymen and a supernatural investigator.

Victrix Highlanders, the (classed as for the rules) infantrymen are pretty much straight from the sprue, the highlander has a two handed sword from a Fireforge medieval sprue of some flavour over one shoulder. The piping on the flank company epaulettes was a bit inconsistent between poses, so I just filled them in and went with solid black. I also got some Blackwatch kilt decals for the kilts, but they were an epic faff, so I went back to the brush, opting for the Hebridean tartan (for reasons).

The Dark Watch was apparently an alternative name for the Blackwatch in their very early days and suits the theme very well. But I needed a pioneer (a sapper for the rules), so converted one from the sprue, using some bathing brass sheet to form the basis of the apron and greenstuff for details.

For variety, he got a head from the Warlord Games 95th Rifles sprue, that looked the part. The axe head is from one of the GW Nightgaunts that were cheap with one of those part works GW do now and then.

The officer is from the Perry Miniatures Royal Navy Landing Party, which also provided the doctor and the supernatural investigator. With the naval rosette removed from his hat and a suitable paint job, he passes for an infantry officer sans bling. Dressed down seems appropriate for covert missions hunting monsters.
